As developers and designers we spend a lot of time in front of a computer monitor. As we build in the digital world we work hard to create seamless experiences for those who use the websites we make. Now and then we are able use that knowledge to help Vancouver get ahead.
This year we helped Vancouver Poetry House launch a series of powerful websites in order to grow their organization and get more people involved in the communities they are creating.
In return they invited us to come check out this year’s Verses Festival of Words, a yearly festival held here in Vancouver, and we had a great time.
I was able to catch this year’s Vancouver Poetry Slam finals, where the year’s best poets competed for a place on the Van Slam Team which travels North America and brings our cities brand of poetry to the world.
Being at the event made me proud to have been part of the team that built their website. Van Slam works hard to create a safe space of both art and people, with topics spanning, race, gender and politics, all of which are treated with fun and respect.
The event wrapped up this weekend but don’t worry, there is still plenty of time to get involved with the poetry slam at their weekly events at Cafe Du Soleil every Monday at 7:00pm.
More information about their events can be found on their website.
